Greentourism at COP4 Carpathian Convention
Between 23 and 26 September 2014 Greentourism Ecological Association was observer at COP4 – Fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Carpathian Convention held in Mikulov, Czech Republic. Among other important meeting outcomes, the Strategy of Sustainable Tourism Development of the Carpathians was adopted by the seven countries that are Parties to the Carpathian Convention. This is a big victory for Carpathian green tourism that governments in Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Ukraine have agreed to focus on tourism development in the shared mountains together in a sustainable way. Together with ICO “Green Dossier”, CEEweb for Biodiversity, Ecological Tourism in Europe, The Homeland Museum of Knjazevac Serbia, The Union of Towns and Cities of Slovakia we signed the NGO Statement on cultural heritage and traditional knowledge to support and give a “green light” to CH Road Map and decisions welcomed by 3 previous Meetings of the COPs. In particular, we supported the Decision COP2/8 which declares: “…and decides to develop and establish a “Carpathian Heritage Inventory”, as a tool for the identification, protection and promotion of Carpathian Heritage.” We all agreed that the maintenance and revitalization of cultural traditions creates great opportunities for sustainable tourism development, as well as for the general social-economic development of the regions. Neglecting the issue of cultural traditions may cause serious problems and is equal to unsustainable development of mountain regions.
